BREAKING: U.S. Supreme Court Rules Against Mandatory LWOP for Juveniles
Today, the United States Supreme Court found
that sentencing juveniles to life in prison without the possibility of parole
(LWOP) for murder is unconstitutional. The court’s 5-4 decision specifically
ruled against mandatory LWOP, or the practice of state laws automatically
sentencing juveniles who commit murder to LWOP. Chief Justice John Roberts
and justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito were the four
justices in dissent.
